Build a reusable lesson-slide system, not one rigid deck. Keep learner orientation, navigation, visual rules, and accessibility structure consistent across the series; then assemble topic-specific explanation, demonstration, practice, and recap modules around a predictable lesson arc. This approach gives learners familiar landmarks without forcing every lesson to teach in the same way.
A strong template is an instructional framework first and a visual system second. Slides can combine words and graphics, but each element should earn its place in the explanation rather than compete for attention. Set the Lesson Arc Before Designing Layouts
Start by deciding what learners should encounter in most lessons. Do this before choosing colors, imagery, or decorative title slides.

- Connection or Preparation - a prior-knowledge prompt, prerequisite term, or brief framing idea. 3

- Recap - return to the central idea and critical features. 7

Treat this as a configurable architecture, not a mandatory sequence or slide count. A short tutorial may move quickly from orientation to demonstration. A complex technical lesson may need several concept-and-example cycles. A discussion-based class may place the learner prompt before the explanation.
Build layouts that help learners connect prior knowledge to new material and notice patterns, relationships, and big ideas. The CAST Universal Design for Learning Guidelines frame these as useful design options, not as a fixed lesson formula.
Design for Chunks, Not Slide Quotas
A "chunk" is a unit of understanding, not a prescribed number of slides. Its size depends on the subject, learner experience, prerequisite knowledge, and whether learners can pause or replay the lesson.
For each chunk, ask:

- What is the one idea, process, or relationship learners need to grasp? 2
- Which terms or symbols must be introduced first? 3
- What example will make the idea concrete? 4
- What prompt will reveal whether learners can use it?
Those answers tell you which modules to include. They should not be replaced by an arbitrary deck-length target.
Build a Slide Module Library
The master template should provide dependable structure while allowing authors to choose the teaching pattern that fits the topic. The goal is not for every lesson to use every layout. It is to give authors an approved set of options that can be assembled quickly and consistently.
A practical minimum module library includes:

Use Consistency as a Navigation Tool
Consistency should help learners recognize where they are and what kind of thinking is expected. For example:

- Use the same recap structure to signal that a lesson is closing.
Reserve emphasis treatments-such as a callout shape, icon, border, or color role-for genuinely important information. If every sentence is highlighted, the signal stops functioning.
When a graphic and its labels must be interpreted together, place them near one another. Avoid sending learners back and forth between a diagram on one side of the slide and a separate legend or explanation block elsewhere.
Keep Slides Readable Without Emptying Them
Do not use a universal word limit. The right amount of on-screen text changes with viewing distance, terminology, subject complexity, learner needs, screen size, and whether narration is available.
Instead, decide what learners need to see while they are processing the slide.
Put These Elements on the Slide
Keep visible content that learners may need to inspect, compare, recall, or act on:

- Definitions, formulas, quotations, labels, and instructions 3
- Key steps in a process 4
- Data, diagrams, and their essential labels 5
- A short takeaway or decision rule 6

For a narrated process diagram, show the process stages, labels, and a short takeaway. Let narration explain transitions, exceptions, and the reasoning behind each stage rather than duplicating that explanation line by line on screen.
Put These Elements Elsewhere
Use narration, facilitator notes, transcripts, or downloadable materials for:

- Background detail that supports but does not need to remain visible 4
- Alternative cases or edge conditions 5
- References that would overwhelm the teaching slide 6
- Instructions for the facilitator in a live session
If graphics and narration are meant to be understood together, present them together. But narration is not required on every slide, and visible text remains essential when learners need to read, quote, search, or revisit information independently.
For visual style, use familiar sans-serif typefaces and avoid all caps, excessive italics, and excessive underlining. Keep emphasis purposeful: hierarchy, spacing, and a small number of visual cues generally work better than making every element visually loud.
Build Accessibility Into the Master Template
Accessibility is a template responsibility and an author responsibility. A well-built master reduces recurring errors; each lesson still needs review because its visuals, links, tables, and media are unique.

Set These as Template Defaults
Build these requirements into the approved layouts:

- Space for captions, source notes, or text alternatives when needed
Do not communicate meaning through color alone. A quiz answer marked only in green, or a warning marked only in red, excludes learners who cannot distinguish the intended color difference. Pair color with text, an icon, a pattern, position, or another clear cue. W3C's guidance on use of color makes this distinction explicit.
Check These in Every Deck
Before publishing, review the actual lesson:

- Does the reading order make sense when content is accessed sequentially? 3
- Do meaningful images, charts, and diagrams have alternative text that explains their instructional purpose? 4
- Are decorative visuals left out of the reading experience where appropriate? 5
- Are links descriptive outside their surrounding sentence? 6
- Is text readable against every background, including text inside shapes and tables? 7
- Are tables simple enough to communicate data clearly? 8
- Are key distinctions communicated by more than color?
Built-in slide layouts can help preserve title and content structure, but they do not remove the need to verify reading order. In Google Slides, for example, reading order follows the sequence in which elements were added rather than their visual placement. The Google Slides accessibility guidance describes both the value of built-in layouts and the need for a manual check.
Automated accessibility checkers can identify some issues, such as missing alternative text or certain contrast problems. Use them during authoring, then perform a visual and navigation review as well.
Create Delivery Variants Without Forking the System
One instructional design can serve live and self-paced learners, but it usually needs delivery-specific variants.
For embedded instructional video, provide captions, subtitles, or an alternative audio option. Where live automatic captions are available, treat them as support that still needs review; availability and accuracy vary by platform.
Maintain one approved core template rather than a collection of disconnected copies. A lightweight governance system is enough:

- Name files consistently by series, lesson, and version. 2
- Store approved logos, icons, images, citation formats, and slide modules in one shared location. 3
- Assign ownership for template changes. 4
- Record what changed, why it changed, and which versions are current. 5
- Test an update on one existing lesson and one new lesson before applying it across the series. 6
- Retire old masters clearly so authors do not begin from outdated files.
This protects consistency without freezing improvement. Learner feedback, accessibility findings, and production friction should lead to updates in the system-not repeated manual fixes in every future deck.
Run a One-Lesson Template Pilot
Choose one upcoming lesson and build only the core modules: orientation, concept explanation, example or demonstration, learner prompt, recap, and next step. Add one variant for the lesson's most content-heavy moment, such as a process diagram, worked problem, or comparison.
Then review the deck on a smaller screen, check learner orientation and accessibility, and note where learners may need more context, pacing control, or an alternative way to participate. Document those changes before building lesson two.
